Diversity Training (Modules 1 & 2)
June 13, 2016
9:00 AM - 3:00 PM

As a way to assist teachers in receiving their Professional Development hours and become better prepared for their students next school year, JCTA will be offering summer NEA Diversity Workshops at the JCTA Office (1941 Bishop Lane, Suite #300)!

Each daily workshop will include 2 Modules from the NEA Diversity curriculum for 5 hours of PD credit/day. Each workshop includes lunch and a light breakfast from 8:30-9:00 am preceding the training start time of 9:00 am. (Please note: We cannot offer credit during the time taken for meals and breaks.) Sign-up at PD Central portal on the JCPS website.

 

Monday, June 13th (9:00 am-3:00 pm)-Modules 1 & 2:

Module 1: Understanding Diversity:
• Define diversity
• Understanding the dimensions of diversity
• Experience how group membership affects self-perception and perception of others
• Reflect on how diversity affects our students, co-workers, and communities

Module 2: Developing Cultural Identity: Exploring Our Core Values & Beliefs
• Explain the depth and breadth of diversity
• Identify core values
• Identify the relationship between core values and behavior
• Demonstrate the impact of values, beliefs, feelings, and self-concept on behavior
• Explore how assumptions, prejudices, and biases are formed

Tuesday, June 14th (9:00 am-3:00 pm)-Modules 3 & 4

Module 3: Reacting to Differences
• Understand the terms “Insiders” and “Outsiders” when discussing identity groups
• Examine how differences can result in negative “Insider and Outsider” relationships
• Identify the “Insiders” and “Outsiders” in your school, district, and/or association
• Explore ways you can work to change the dynamics of social oppression

Module 4: Valuing Diversity
• Define “diversity competence” and explore its various stages
• Identify how the lack of diversity competence offends individuals/groups
• Explore methods to enhance communication when we have been offended
• Develop action plans to apply diversity principles in our own environments
