JCTA is governed by a multitude of elected officials. Our organization is led by four officers and our board of directors. Our main policy-making body is the professional representative council, which is comprised of representatives from each school site or program location. Each school is allowed one professional representative and one alternate for every fifteen members or a major fraction thereof at its site. JCTA also has a full-time staff of employees who help to implement our policies, advise the leadership, and advocate for members.

JCTA continues to be the collective bargaining agent for over 6,000 certified personnel employees of the Jefferson County Public Schools for over fifty years.
We represent teachers, librarians, speech clinicians, physical therapists, and occupational therapists in every one of the public schools throughout Jefferson County.

Our JCTA Mission:
• Organize and Empower Public Educators
• Promote Success for Every Learner
• Serve as the Active Voice for Excellence in Public Education
• Advocate for the Rights and Interests of Members
• Advance Human, Civil, and Economic Rights for All

JCTA Supports Local Control of Public Education

The Jefferson County Teachers Association strongly supports local control of public schools, by those closest to the learners.  Not only is this the most democratic way to operate these public institutions, but it is how we create school environments that most effectively promote learning.  By elevating the voices of each school’s students, teachers, and families, we can best make our classrooms relevant and engaging for each learner, which is essential for student success.  For this reason, the Association believes district decisions are best made by local boards of education, rather than policymakers in Frankfort, and school decisions are best made by School Based Decision-Making (SBDM) Councils, rather than school boards or superintendents.

A Better Way Forward for JCPS!

A coalition of public education stakeholders, including students, educators, parents, and community leaders, has developed a plan to give all Jefferson County Public School students access to a quality public education. The student-focused 11-point plan (see below) called, “A Better Way Forward for JCPS,” represents the district’s best hope for creating the public schools Jefferson County Students deserve.

You can also add your name and  pledge your support for the plan, and help turn our vision for a brighter educational future for all kids into a reality.
